The challenge

A commercial infrastructure developer was finalising plans to connect a newly constructed logistics hub to a private substation grid. To greenlight the final high-voltage connection they needed to verify that the substation could handle the additional load.

Three critical blindspots stood in the way: the substation's actual installed equipment could not be confirmed from records, its current utilisation was unknown, and there was no reliable picture of what else had been connected to it since the last survey.

Commissioning a physical survey would have delayed the connection decision and the hub's opening with it.

What we built

  1. 01

    Asset identification from imagery

Satellite and aerial imagery of the substation and its surrounding corridor were processed to detect and classify the physical equipment present — transformers, switchgear bays, and the distribution lines running into and out of the site.

  2. 02

    Capacity and utilisation estimation

Detected hardware was cross-referenced against equipment class characteristics to estimate installed capacity, then compared against the load implied by everything else visibly connected to the same substation.

  3. 03

    Connection-readiness report

Findings were delivered as a structured report the developer's engineering team could take into the connection decision, with each conclusion traceable to a dated, located detection.

What came out of it

  • Substation capacity verified in 72 hours, without a physical survey.
  • All three blindspots closed before the high-voltage connection was committed.
  • The connection decision proceeded on evidence rather than on out-of-date records.
